GSP Fly Tying Thread Guide
GSP, short for gel-spun polyethylene, is a synthetic fly-tying thread known for combining a fine profile with high tensile strength. Compared with many conventional fly-tying materials at a similar denier or diameter, GSP is valued for its exceptionally high tensile strength, low bulk, low stretch and smooth surface.

Handling Tips
- Use a smooth bobbin: A ceramic-tip or burr-free bobbin helps protect the filament bundle and deliver thread smoothly.
- Manage tension: GSP is strong and has low stretch, so use steady pressure and avoid crushing delicate foam, hair or synthetic fibers.
- Add grip when needed: GSP has a smooth surface. A small amount of tying wax can help reduce slippage during techniques that require extra hold.
- Cut carefully: Use sharp, dedicated fly-tying scissors or a suitable blade and avoid dragging the thread across rough edges.
- Flatten or split the bundle: If the thread construction permits, a bodkin can help separate or flatten the bundle for dubbing loops and other techniques. Ease tension before splitting.
